“The mind is its own geography.”

I rarely know exactly where these landscapes come from. They are not based on one place, but made up of different things I have seen over years of travelling. A tree, a stretch of water, a building, the shape of a hill. In these paintings, those fragments belong together in ways they never did in reality.

Although these places do not exist, they often feel very familiar to me. It is as different locations I have carried with me have slowly merged into landscapes of their own.

For a long time I thought of these works as separate landscapes. After a while, I began to see connections between them: water seeming to continue beyond the edge of one painting, similar hills appearing somewhere else, places that felt as if they might exist close to one another. That eventually became An Unfinished Atlas of Imagined Places.
