Memory
Fragments of Morocco reshaped by memory, color and feeling.
In South of Memory, landscapes, streets and interiors begin with places I encountered in Morocco, and with the atmosphere, colors and intricate details that stayed with me.
Unlike much of my other work, this series sometimes starts from actual locations. At the same time, I am less interested in describing them exactly than in translating what they felt like. Sometimes what remains is only a certain texture, a plant, a pattern, or the sense of warmth in a room.
As the series developed, I also began to create places that do not exist. Fragments from different locations, patterns and architectural elements come together within a single scene.
These paintings are not an attempt to reconstruct these places exactly. They are closer to the feeling of having been somewhere once, and carrying parts of it with you without ever being able to return to it in quite the same way.
